Why my cat is shedding so much
Normal moult, stress, diet, or a vet visit: how to tell the difference.
An indoor cat sheds all year, often more in spring. A clump on the sofa is not always a health problem. This guide separates a normal moult from signs that deserve a vet. It does not replace medical advice.
A normal moult
Guard hairs and undercoat renew. Long-haired cats (Persian, Maine Coon) leave more on dark fabric. A short brush, several times a week, lifts dead hair before it drifts.
When to worry
Bald patches, red skin, intense itching, weight loss or a sudden shed are not “just moulting.” Book a visit. Do not promise that a brush or a kibble fixes an allergy.
What helps at home
Brush over a mat you shake outside. Run a robot daily on floors and a lint roller on the sofa. Wash the cat’s blanket. A complete diet supports the coat, but it is not a treatment.
FAQ
Does an indoor cat still moult?
Yes. Light and heating flatten the seasons, so many cats shed a little all year.
Is a Furminator required?
No. A comb matched to the coat is often enough. Deshedding blades should be gentle, not a daily pass on sensitive skin.
